TechShop is a DIY workshop that offers members access to a large array of equipment and manufacturing machines.

TechShop is a DIY workshop that offers members access to a large array of equipment and manufacturing machines.  A good way to think of us is like a gym, but with mills and welders instead of treadmills and weights.  We have a lot of CNC machines that help our members take their concepts to the next step, from CAD design to physical part.

Here’s a quick run-down of our CNC equipment, as well as a few other items they might be interested in.

Stratasys Dimension SST
This 3D printer can make single-color models out of very strong ABS plastic.  It is great for making structural models as an alternative to machining or injection molding.    TechShop Menlo Park provides 3D Printing Services to serve your needs.  Whether you are a TechShop member or not, we print your model for you!

Please email us at 3dprintaccount@techshop.ws for a quotation for your particular 3D STL-format model.  We will supply you with a fixed price with no surprises.

*note:  the 3D printer at TechShop is the only machine in the shop not run by our members.  Everything else is hands on and DIY.

CNC Embroiderer
Create custom shirts, hats, and bags with your own logos and artwork.

CNC Vinyl Cutter
This CNC cutter creates letters, graphics, and logos from a sticky-backed vinyl.  Perfect for decals, signs, and stencils.

CNC Laser Cutter and Etcher
Our versatile 45 Watt lasers are perfect for fabricating small parts and artwork.  They will cut and etch acrylic, wood, paper, mat board, fabric, and food.  They will also etch stone, glass, and anodized metal.  Great for architectural models, small robotic parts and the like.

CNC Plasma Cutter
This machine features a large 60″ x 120″ bed to fit large stock and sheet metal.  Able to cut aluminum, brass, and 3/8″ steel, the CNC Plasma Cutter is great for precise 2D cutouts in metal.

CNC Desktop Mill – The Techno
This small CNC mill is great for smaller projects and works well with foam, plastics, and sheet aluminum.

CNC Wood Router – The ShopBot
The ShopBot  will mill everything, from wood to plywood, MDF, bamboo, foam, and plastic.  Great for creating custom furniture, crown molding, prototypes, and molds.  Use the ShopBot to create molds out of MDF that you can then use on our industrial vacuum former to create custom plastic parts.

CNC Four-Axis Mill – The Tormach
Designed for real work, the Tormach CNC Mill has the strength, power, and accuracy needed to cut serious materials.  Circuit boards, aluminum, and engineering polymers are a breeze when your CNC machine is built to cut materials like steel, iron, stainless steel, and titanium.

TechShop also feature various sheet metal fabrication equipment, wood shop tools, TIG, MIG, and Oxy-Acetylene welders, manual mills and lathes, a 3D scanner and more.  Stop by for a free tour anytime, or visit our website at www.techshop.ws

We’re located at:
TechShop

Apple 3D Head-tracking for… Manufacturing?

Apple 3D Head-tracking for… Manufacturing?

Apple recently filed a patent for a new 3D user interface. It would reportedly use Apple’s existing iSight camera to track users head movements and then change the screen perspective accordingly. The sensing mechanism may even be able to detect features on a user’s face (eyes, mouth, where the eyes are looking) or the position of a user’s hands, arms, or other body part. For a detailed account of the patent, head over to the PatentlyApple blog.

Manufacturing Software Advice thinks this technology would be great to design and prototype products. They would like to see Apple’s technology integrated with CAD/CAM software. This would allow engineers to change a design, test “what if” scenarios and directly manipulate a product model all with a series of hand gestures or head nods.

To help visualize this, they created a mock-demonstration video: Apple 3D for Manufacturing.

3 New Solidworks & Pro-E OpportunitiesHi Gary,

I hope this message finds you well and Happy New Year!  I am currently looking for 3 people to help a client of ours convert Pro-E files to Solidworks files and I wanted to open this up to your group.  Typically the response is overwhelming so I want to let your group know I will only be able to respond if they meet the following:

· 2-3+ years experience on Solidworks, last used in industry job within 6 months

· 1-2+ years experience on Pro-E

· Can work from home for 40 hours a week and be able to come to SJ office and meet with the client 1-3 times a week.

· Electronics industry experience a huge plus

· Experience converting Pro-E files to Solidworks (or visa versa) is a huge plus too.

Thanks for helping me spread the word!
